Hoghton
Tower -
This Stately Home of England Boasts dungeons,
the King's Bedchamber, Ballroom, and a magnificent
Banqueting Hall with minstrel gallery and
is where the 'Loin of Beef ' was knighted
by King James I in 1617. Whilst King James
1st was staying at the tower he was so impressed
by Sir Richard de Hoghton's lavish hospitality
and the loin of beef he was served, that he
took out his sword and knighted the joint,
"I Knight thee Sir Loin" hence the

Witton
Country Park and Visitor Centre -
Witton Country Park covers 480 acres of attractive
countryside with picnic sites, walks, nature
trails, orienteering course, cycle-way and
riverside walk suitable for wheelchairs and
pushchairs. The visitor centre set in early
19thC stable-block has a small mammal collection,
the old stables tearoom and information point

Lewis Textile Museum - There are lots of hands-on
activities and new displays to enjoy in the
recently re-opened Lewis Textile Museum. The
Museum also has an exciting exhibition programme
featuring art and craft from across the North
West.

Museum and Art Gallery - is housed
in a beautiful 'Arts and Crafts' style building
in the town centre (near the Town Hall and
cinema). Opened in 1872 originally as both
a museum and a library, Blackburn Museum now
offers a lively programme of exhibitions and
events for all the family. Highlights include: |

The Hart Collection of more than 10,000
rare coins, 500 rare books and illuminated
manuscripts;
The Lewis Collection of over 1,000
Japanese prints
One of the largest collections of religious
icons outside London;
A superb collection of Victorian
oils and watercolours;
The award-winning South Asian Gallery,
which outlines the culture of Pakistan and
India as a reflection of the history and
heritage of Blackburn's South Asian population;
A selection from the town's social
history collections;
The Lewis Textile Museum (just around
the corner, on Exchange Street, facing the
Town Hall) tells the story of the town's
cotton industry and is open Tues - Sat 11.00am
- 4.00pm;

Cathedral - There has been a church
on this site in the heart of Blackburn since
596. In 1826 a new church was built for Blackburn.
In 1926 the Diocese of Blackburn was founded
and Blackburn Parish Church became the Cathedral.
